Proposals to harmonise the method wind generators connect to the electricity system across Europe have been published by the European Wind Energy Association.

The trade body said that clear rules are necessary due to the "dramatic increase" in wind power penetration across Europe. It claimed that wind power currently provides over 4% of the EU's electricity.

In Europe, each country currently sets out its own technical specifications for power producers to connect to the electricity system. The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) said these are not always technically justified nor economically sound from the point of view of the electricity system.

Harmonised rules would lower wind energy production costs, contribute to an efficient management of the system, and lower the cost of the electricity for consumers, the EWEA said.
