I've had this short article published in Leeds City Council's "Environment Leeds" Newsletter, which apparently has a circulation of some 1600.
| Quote: | There is growing coverage of the phenomenon of ?Peak Oil? in the national media, but what is it and what does it mean for Leeds? In simple terms, peak oil describes the point in time when the rate of global oil production reaches its highest point and then enters terminal decline, causing a serious shortfall between supply and demand that will push prices through the roof.
So, if the Peak Oil theory is correct, what can Leeds do about it? Many of the steps required to prepare for peak oil are similar to those needed to mitigate against climate change: use car sharing schemes, public transport or cycle, use less electricity and gas, insulate our buildings more, generate electricity from renewable sources, start local micro-generation schemes, grow food locally, re-use and recycle even more.
One thing is clear; oil and gas scarcity will force us to consider our energy use more carefully, but it will no doubt prompt many ingenious solutions to the array of challenges that await us. It may also force us to work more cooperatively; to rediscover our sense of community and belonging, and bring about a happier, healthier world.
UK Peak Oil awareness campaign PowerSwitch is setting up a local initiative to help Leeds meet the challenges of Peak Oil. For more information please email joe@powerswitch.org.uk |
They've edited it to take all the scary stuff out and have focussed purely on the positives, but the term "Peak Oil" is liberally sprinkled thoughout the piece, so if nothing else it's useful in terms of perpetuating the peak oil meme and is still a free plug for Powerswitch. |
