My main concerns re smart meters are unreliability and the potential for unjustified disconnection, together with rapidly costs.

Cases abound of billing f**k ups, with customers facing huge bills from suppliers that they no longer use, for example. If those suppliers could remotely cut off the customer, then I bet that they would.

The remote cutting off mechanism must involve some form of relay or contactor. How reliable will these be at carrying substantial currents for decades ? how many will fail, possibly with risk of fire.

How long until the remote control features are hacked into by criminals, perhaps to black out a district for looting.

How much will it cost, and will it be as successful as other large government led IT projects. How long until the software needs updating and at what cost.

That would be a bit of long over due justice. One can only hope.
