Plans to generate electricity from the world's first series of tidal lagoons have been unveiled in the UK.

The six lagoons - four in Wales and one each in Somerset and Cumbria - will capture incoming and outgoing tides behind giant sea walls, and use the weight of the water to power turbines.

A 1bn Swansea scheme, said to able to produce energy for 155,000 homes, is already in the planning system.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey says he wants to back the project.

The cost of generating power from the Swansea project will be very expensive, but the firm behind the plan says subsequent lagoons will be able to produce electricity much more cheaply.

It says the series of six lagoons could generate 8% of the UK's electricity for an investment of 12bn.

And what of all of the migratory marine life that will get chopped to bits on the way in and out? That artist's impression does not match what I have read about these lagoons. From what I have read, they will span the entire mouth of natural harbours and so all marine life must pass through them on the way in and out of estuaries.

+1. This image (from the above link) shows the scale of the proposed development. Rolling Eyes

From the above picture the lagoon does not cover any part of an estuary or harbour entrance and the turbines turn quite slowly so are not that dangerous to wildlife.

How much usable energy will this actually generate?

How many years will it be before it becomes carbon neutral?
