I've almost finished my lunch and I've just found a slug crawling out of my salad! I hope it is the only one that was in there. Will this put people off their food in a future of much more "grow your own"?

One of our water supplies is softened, so food to be washed is usually in a bowl or sink of salty water; it does the trick. Throw in the spinach or broccoli or whatever and five minutes later, there's always a creature or two wriggling about at the bottom!

It's not strong enough to kill them but they're trying to get away from it of course.

It rained yesterday. Wouldn't that wash them?

These are outside. I'll have to plant some inside very soon to take over for the winter. The outside ones went to seed a while ago but they still taste alright.

Laughing

When it rains here, the tops of leaves outside get washed while the underside of leaves get splashed with dirt. You can't win.

I don't want any pesticides on my broccoli or other salad greens so a salt water soak separates the cabbage worms from my lunch. And no matter how much washing and rinsing you do there will always be some grit at the bottom of a spinach pot so use a big tall lobster pot and skim your boiled clean spinach or chard off the top. And if a slug or worm still gets through just deduct it from your protein requirements. Rolling Eyes

Oh, they need no special measures to avoid. I haven't worried about those on my food for 30-odd years. Laughing Laughing

You were talking about pesticides in that post.
