The power of the sun is to be recreated in a new 1 billion science project which aims to provide a clean and almost limitless source of energy.

British scientists will this week begin work to create a nuclear fusion reactor, which will use the same powerful reactions that take place in the Sun to provide energy and, ultimately, electricity.

Sorry team, this may work ... but it's certainly not a new idea.

A spokesman for the STFC said: "The future location of HiPER is being explored over the next few years, with the UK being a prime candidate."

They need YEARS - just to decided the effing location ... typical.

This sort of approach may indeed work. Unlike toroids, I suspect this is the sort of technology that can be privatised. Bill Gates or Richard Branson wouldn't need years just to decide the location!

We NEED this technology - it's too important to be left to The Usual Suspects.

(Actually the initial use of this laser technology WAS initially a private venture in the US (over 20 or so years ago if I recollect correctly) ... until the US govt heard about it. The factory was seized by the US govt and surrounded by barbed wire etc ... and I believe guarded by armoured vehicles too! Why? Because if you can cause a deuterium pellet to fuse, then you can scale this up to make a fusion bomb trigger. A poor man's entry into major nuclear weapons.)

Fusion fuel, deuterium and tritium is also readily available in seawater. Just 2lbs of fusion fuel is capable of producing the same amount of energy as 10,000 tonnes of fossil fuel.

So, on the basis that we are using 85 million barrels of oil per day which is 12.25 Mtonnes oil per day. To replace this oil we would use 895,000 tonnes of water per year and what weight of helium would that produce? How long would it be before all our voices started getting squeaky because of all the extra helium in the atmosphere? And what other problems would it throw up?

How many years would it be before we started to notice a drop in the ocean level?
