67,000 for a grid connection.

For 10% of that one could install a small wind turbine and 12 volt battery lighting, a diesel generator for limited use of high loading appliances, and an efficient stove to replace the open fire used at present.

Whilst such a high charge for a grid connection may appear harsh, I am not convinced that those who choose to buy a property without a grid connection, should then be subsidised to be connected.

Small wind turbine, 12 volt 400 A/H battery, 8 lights, basic 12 volt wiring would be about 1,000/2,000

A diesel generator of about 5 KW and basic wireing of one ring circuit would be about 3,000.

Two modern solid fuel stoves, about 1,000 including installation.

I know what you're saying.

There again, adam2, if a Thatcher do-alike had been around in Ireland (I do realise you're talking about an annexed part of the island) in the fifties, only large conurbations here would be supplied with mains electricity.

Not a bad thing, on reflection!

Would he be allowed to have a wind turbine if they can't put up electricity poles?

I doubt that a large turbine would be permitted, but I was thinking of something like a Rutland on a small tower.
These are available with moveable masts for camping etc. just say it is temporary and move it around if need be.

He doesn't need electricity he needs to insulate the house and, as Adam says, put in a closed stove and a bit of renewable DODGY. If he insulated properly he would pay less for his fuel as well. Mind you he'll need a fifty year mortgage on what he gets for, I presume, his pension.
