The Guardian - 15/04/11

America's most majestic landscapes – from the Grand Canyon to Mount Rushmore – are at risk because of booming global demand for uranium, a new report warns.

The report, by the Pew Environment Group, calls on the Obama administration to overhaul antiquated laws governing the mining of gold and uranium, and offer permanent protection to national landmarks.

Article continues ...

Quote:
The last five years have seen a 2,000% increase in mining claims in the west. More than 8,000 mining claims have been staked in the Grand Canyon alone – mainly by major international companies rather than the pick and shovel claims of yore.

Shocked Sad

Oil bad. Uranium good. What is the Grand Canyon anyway? A nice geologic cross section by which we can locate uranium lodes!

Thanks for your feedback, Homer.

I think it was irony, but I can't be sure.

Homer also said (in between writing the Illiad and the Odyssey) Wink

Quote:
“Look now how mortals are blaming the gods, for they say that evils come from us, but in fact they themselves have woes beyond their share because of their own follies”

I think that line actually comes from the Odyssey itself rather than something between the Illiad and the Odyssey.

Not that someone who instantly references cartoon characters first out of the gate is familiar with the classics.
I don't see why not. Fils, for example, is familiar with both.

And if I told you that private schools are called Public schools here in the UK would you think it was a wind-up Very Happy ?

RGR
The Guardian is a UK national newspaper for the green loonies where they go for hugs and to share environmental platitudes - always good for a laugh on a rainy day. Aurora gets his daily comfort from it. (It used to be called the Manchester Guardian - then it was very good indeed).

It's a complicated business this: on the one hand we're told that uranium if just about to disappear as a resource, and the next, when it's coming out of ears, that it's a scar on the landscape.

A bit like this troublesome surge in gas resources which threatens to cancel the peak oil problem for a few hundred years. I'd like more information on that, please.

It wasn't just you RGR, both posts added nothing to the subject in hand (in fact yours was the cleaner of the two) and were most likely knocked up in 30 seconds. You can forget the "groupthink" argument; it's nonsense.

Basically, just use some common sense; if anyone posts material that's likely to kick off a flamefest, then we will sort it out.

And (this is directed at everyone) don't think that we can't see through subtle insults.
