I wouldn't have thought so. The HGV does all the work by pushing the air out of its path and at some point behind it it'll start to resemble things pre-HGV. I doubt you'd increase fuel consumption if you drive in front of this point, after all there's no real physical connection between the HGV and the following vehicle to cause drag.
Or I may be completely wrong. |
Well I've just done two long motorway days and, based on that, it makes no difference to the lead vehicle that the consumption meter can see. It may be a case of REALLY getting something for nothing _________________ On the point of giving up and dropping out.... |

Bah.
There must be something wrong with me then. I drive my car to the train station, then I walk about 500 yards to the train station because I can't get parked then I walk about another 500 yards to the office. |

If you want to get into drafting and the aerodynamics of it you ought to go to some NASCAR sites. Races are won and lost on who can draft tight behind a leader right up to the last lap then slingshot past that leader ,who has used up all his fuel and overheated his car, for the win. There are few mysteries about it but the one problem that trumps all others is that to draft on an open road you have to follow too close for safety and if your following a box truck you are totally out of the view of the truck drivers mirrors.
Don't do it ever.!! |
