Status as Transition Initiative

Transition Brighton & Hove has stopped being an official Transition
initiative, as it's now very small (four members attended the last
forum meeting), and it's now classified as dormant, with a similar
treatment as "mullers". Other groups of people may also contact the
Transition Network to be considered "mullers" in Brighton & Hove. If
at one point, two or more separate groups wish to become formally
Transition initiatives and don't wish to merge, the Transition Network
is to decide what to do.

Finances

The following transfers have been made:

- 1,318.86 from the Council grant returned to the Council

- 1,207.40 of Grow Your Neighbour's Own funding transferred to the
Food Partnership account, which will hold the money until a new GYNO
is opened.

-975 surplus from the Transition South East Conference transferred to
South East Transition bank account

- 380 raised from the Age of Stupid screening transferred to the
Green Centre

- 284 from Infinity Foods funding for the TB&H allotment transferred
to the Whitehawk Community Food Project

This leaves a balance of 361.13 in the bank account.

The bank account has been frozen until there is a quorum of 20 to make
financial decisions. This has been done as a consequence of serious
concerns raised on the legality of the stated intentions of the
treasurer voted in the last session of the AGM, attended only by 7
people and irregular in several respects.

Website

The domain transitionbrightonandhove.org.uk is due to expire in
August. Once it expires, the website will disappear.

Allegations

Various allegations of fraud and theft have been made. None of them
has been tried by a court of law, therefore everything should be
considered legal till something is proven otherwise. The allegations
involve:

- The use of the Transition Brighton & Hove office by Martin Grimshaw

- Money paid to Martin Grimshaw for organizing the Transition training
session

- The information provided in the application for the Council grant,
written by Beth Tilston and Martin Grimshaw

- Repeated attempts by John Kapp and Graham Ennis to take control of
the TB&H bank account

- Some money transfers done by Ann Baldridge, including the ones
listed above

Not much one can say about that. Oops.

It's crazy that this happens in Brighton of all places Sad.

Giving money back to the council? Send it to Wales instead, as we could use it. We've got stuff we're itching to do, but ain't got any money Crying or Very sad. We're planning a funding bid, but it will be months before we get the dosh (if we do), and we've got stuff to do NOW. Our Housing Group needs a marquee or big tent by 2nd July.

http://newsfrombrighton.co.uk/brighton-and-hove-news/transition-brighton-and-hove-descends-into-wild-allegations-and-abusive-behaviour/

Quote:
Brighton and Hove community group which aims to respond to the challenges of climate change appears unable to deal with the challenge of working together.

A statement on Transition Brighton and Hove’s website by chair Martin Grimshaw has explained that the community group is on the brink of dissolution after a number of members have ‘either resigned or disengaged in the wake of unresolved complaints, wild allegations and abusive behaviour’.

The breakdown led to an ‘AGM’ being called, although Mr Grimshaw explains that the so-called ‘Enabling Group’, which is in charge of organising such events, were not able to ‘guarantee a safe and constructive space for members and is not hosting the event’.

Mr Grimshaw said: “As a result, there are those who would like to see either the organisation dissolve or frozen until we can foster again an enjoyable, useful, welcoming and productive space, in the spirit of the Transition Towns model. Equally there are those who think that the organisation should continue.”

It has been explained that outstanding money belonging to the group, which currently stands at Ł5,200, would be transferred to a local Brighton and Hove not for profit organisation.

Not surprised at all! When I was in Brighton, the TT group was known as a talking shop and a joke... good riddance.

Hopefully something better will take its place.

Yes. Green-led council, Green MP and a transition town initiative from hell.

UE, perhaps you should redact the names in the last part of the email, because those individuals may not appreciate the claims about them being spread around the internet. Can't be too careful these days.

That email was sent out to everybody who had shown an interest in TT B&H. It is public information.

At least DCI John Barnaby hasn't had to be called in yet! Surprised

I am just waiting for a Midsomer TT group to be set up. In fact maybe I will suggest it to the scriptwriters.

Not much different from Oxford's "implosion".

The problem with talking about "energy descent" is that at some time you have to do it -- and when you reach that point of realisation the shit really hist the fan. The strongest groups I've visited over the last few years have all had a practical focus -- e.g. allotments, community projects, etc. -- so they're already thinking/acting in that direction. I think those for whom it's a largely academic exercise find it more difficult because change represents more of a personal wrench from "normality".

Do you lot appreciate how much logistics and prior organisation is required to raid a hippy Transition site? Helicopters, horses, dogs, forensics, and 200 rank and file. Not to mention co-ordinating with our apparently very generous helpful and active undercover chap.

Agreed. The TT groups which will have a long lasting impact, whatever happens in the future, will be those with a practical focus.

Too much green politics and academic style wars is the worst way to prepare for PO and Brighton TT is an example of that.

I had some of that on our Housing Group site once!

I still can't work out whether our Transition Group really gets the problem. It seems so cosy and green club like at times, but when anyone questions it, the response is that we're all doing what we can. The few active people probably are doing all, or more, than they can, but maybe we're not looking at it in the right way. At least we're all honest, and don't have any money to misuse!
