Another forum I'm on has extremely strict rules for accepting new members, a waiting period while the mods examine the 'application' and then a probationary period for new members' posts.

Then, if there is an ad hominem attack, the culprit is given the first of three warnings, with the line something like, "Attack the argument, not the arguer". That's basically it, three strikes and you're out.

That forum has arguments, discussions, suggestions and contributions from thousands upon thousands of members (with an extremely wide age range) and, no doubt because of the above, very few have ever been banned.

If/when this forum gets bigger then we may need such a rule. At the moment it's a rather exclusive little club.

We suffer from two main types of nasty dispute. The first is caused by the peak-oil deniers like RGR, who can be dealt with by removal. The second is the left/right political disputes and I think those are going to get worse as the situation deteriorates.

IMO it is because there are few controls on arrogant and inappropriate posters that this is only a small forum.

Right now I wouldn't recommend this forum to my friends.......

Too true, Keela.

I'm reluctant to take part in discussion on this new thread today http://www.powerswitch.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=192108#192108
because the original post has already been jumped upon. I really don't want to feed trolls.

I've long ago come to the opinion that PowerSwitch would gain by being more pro-actively moderated.
