The softening-up process begins. When will Scotland allow fracking?

many direct and indirect jobs

Yus, here we go. This notion of 'jobs' is a common frightener, never acknowledging that some jobs should never exist, let alone be preserved.

The trouble with people like Ratcliffe is they think being rich is an atonement for all the selfish, greedy decisions they make while thinking, if not indeed claiming, "I have done nothing wrong".

We are all doing wrong by burning fossil fuels, (and breeding like rats).

Government overturns local rejection of fracking and gives the OK in Lancashire.

Where's Mobbsey when you need him?

Expect violent local activity in the coming months.

Madness, utter stupidity. This is the conservatives doing what they do best, ignoring ordinary people and trashing the planet.

Madness? No. Utter stupidity? No.

"This will mean cheaper energy, and it's safe, and we will monitor everything." Yours sincerely, Head honcho, Cuadrilla, your fracking friend.

See? It's all going to be wonderful.

Scotland bans underground coal gasification

It is the Scottish governments view that UGC poses numerous and serious environmental risks and, on that basis, the Scottish government cannot support this technology. Accordingly, UCG will have no place in Scotlands energy mix at this time.

The key words there are "at this time".
A decade or two in the future when energy becomes both scarce and expensive they can and will change those rules.
Saving that supply for those future very difficult times is probably a good thing.

Most of the coal in the UK to gasify is under the North Sea between UK/Europe.

It's all just so silly and pointless.

There's no money in fracking - the US operation has now been exposed as the ponzi scheme it was with largest areas in decline leaving $bn debts. In the UK there's no real reserve once you factor in population density and opposition, we're never going to see 10,000 wells drilled in England!

I wonder just why the government are willing go down this route... instead of renewables/efficiency for example (which would create more jobs). Surely it can't just be to enrich a few dozen old white men?

You are if some get their way. Look out for old or stupid (or both) white men. They are also building HS2 and a third runway at Heathrow. Indeed, an MP, who lives under the flight path, on Radio4 this morning said it will be good as he and his children will be able to get a well paid job locally. Pollution and other concerns are not significant when compared to that. Says he.

Sajid Javid, who overturned the local decision, has received donations from pro-fracking US lobby group AEI to attend and speak at once of their conferences.

There maybe no money in it now when you have cheaper alternative supplies coming in from Qatar, and sometime soon Russia, but once those cheaper supplies have been exhausted there will be plenty of money to wring out of every little coal seam left in the UK and under the North Sea.
