Visitors on Thu/Fri would have been in little doubt that the forums were down, being greeted with an ugly-looking database error.

I made a few attempts to squirrel away backups ahead of repairing the database (just to be on the safe side), but these were giving discouraging results so I engaged the help of the hosting company, who have their own 12-hourly backups and could effect repairs with more assurance. So, thanks to Roger at Easy Internet Solutions, we're up and running again.

It's still not clear what caused the problem, but the host itself was rebooted at around the same time because of a sudden load spike; the fact that services are stopped gracefully should have prevented any database corruption, and no other customers were affected. So maybe we're just special.

I've also taken the opportunity for a bit of housekeeping around the site, cleaning away old files and ancient emails that were using up inordinate amounts of disk space - nothing that should be visible to users - which should help keep things running smoothly.

Many thanks for your efforts re this.
BTW I dont think it was only us affected.
An unrelated public forum went down at about the same time, as did a private one in which I am involved.

Er sorry, that was definitely a typo.

Error message still happens on clicking the first item in the Transport section on modified vehicles.

Are you still seeing it there? Are you seeing it anywhere else? I can't see anythign in that thread's first page which would be related, but there were some posts deleted so it could plausibly have been triggered by something in those.
