To be frank, I have become less 'preppy' as the years move by.

That said, I feel that a stock of 'doom currency' might be useful.

Ideally these should be cheap to acquire, small in size & light in weight for portability, and with a long shelf life.

Candidates might include:

* Plastic boxes of sweetener 'pills'
* Condoms
* Disposable Bic style lighters
* Aspirin etc
* Vitamin pills
* Plasters & medicated wipes
* Ammunition (US only)
* Cable ties

If bulkier items are sought:
* Strong bin bags with ties
* Female health products
* Loo paper
* Wind up torches
* Wind up radios
* Solar phone chargers

What would be your candidates?

Also medium size PV modules, 20 to 50 watts.
Long life batteries, energiser ultimate lithium.
Vodka or other spirits.
Long life freeze dried doomfood.
Miniature bulbs especially very low power ones. 2.5 volt 0.06a for example.
LED torch bulbs.
Candles.
Paraffin.

Tinned/dried food

Candles

Key cleaning and hygiene products such as bleach, detergent, bog paper etc

Tobacco

Key medicines

Alcohol

Any of the above are reasonably portable and low-energy-storable will be eminently tradeable in a shit-hits-the-fan situation

My initial thought would be booze , tobacco and precious metals but if no one wanted to trade with me I'd be lumbered with spirits I drink very little of and cigarettes I don't touch at all . But then again if I then stock things I'd have use for myself I probably wouldn't want to trade with those items.
Perhaps things like seeds and tools might be a good idea.

Even in the UK ammunition has value . A twelve gauge shotgun shell might trade for a days work in a post SHTF scenario. And like diamonds the scarcer they are the more they would be worth. And let's not forget what a can of Spam would get a soldier during WW2.

You would need a permit to buy them and the shotgun to fire them from in order to stock up on them.

Technically you CAN own shotgun cartridges as long as you have been GIVEN them. You cannot BUY them.

However, despite what the law says, both the giver and givee would have some explaining to do if questioned by PC Plod.

IMO, A stock of shotgun cartridges could be valuable even without a gun.
After TEOTWAWKI, it might be easy to acquire a gun if the ammunition was no longer readily available.

Returning to more general doom stocks, sugar is arguably of more use than the artificial sweetener suggested in the O/P.
Whilst times are normal, many people use sweetening tablets if they enjoy sweetened drinks but wish to avoid the weight gain from sugar.
However in most types of doom, food will be short and the calories in real sugar would therefore be valuable.
Sugar is cheap in bulk and keeps forever if dry.

Matches could be valuable.
Fresnel lens for fire lighting in sunlight.
Cigarettes are useful for trade.
Whilst a tin opener is needed, there is at least one in every home, and more in shops, so unlikely to have much scarcity value.
Chlorine tablets for water purification could be in demand, they are very cheap in bulk whilst times are normal, but have a limited shelf life.
