This looks interesting..

Windows could be used as powerful solar panels thanks to a clever new technology that concentrates the sun's rays. The technique uses transparent dyes to capture, concentrate and redirect light along the surface of the glass to photovoltaic (PV) cells in the frame, which convert the light into electricity. The breakthrough means that there is a tenfold increase in power output compared to use of the PV cell alone

Sounds guid. We could have a new vista on things by 2011.

How much of the solar spectrum do regular PV cells typically utilise?

Their diagram suggests that visible light would pass straight through the dye-coated window, and light outside the visible spectrum is absorbed and re-emitted (for use by the PV cells around the edges). Looking at the solar spectrum/intensity graph, that seems to miss out on a big chunk of the incident energy - does the 10x collection efficiency make up for that, or would it not be used anyway?

Well, it's still eXPerimental...
