We're switching to a new hosting company, and I'm bringing the switch forward because of Lycos' continued locking of the site.
Please try and be done with any posting or editing by about 2330h today.
  • 2359h Mon 14 July: Portal and Forum will be temporarily locked
  • by 0100 Tue 15 July: Portal and Forum made read-only
  • ... database backups and restore to new site proceeding
  • ... old site will have colours / style changed slightly (probably red)
  • 0200h New site activated
  • as updated information propagates, visitors will see new site
  • by 0300h New site updates permitted

All URLs to access the site will remain the same. If you have problems accessing the new site, or if you continue to see the old, read-only site, please email info@powerswitch.org.uk

If the new host has problems in the first hour or so, I'll revert the existing one to read-write again.

We're now running on the new server.

Lycos made a good attempt to louse things up for us at the last minute, locking the site once again, requiring us to jump through a few hoops to get a completely up-to-date dump of the forum database.

If you made a post between about 6pm on Monday and the time the site was locked, please check whether your post is visible here.

I've not been able to make the old site read-only or recolour it to make sure people know which site they're looking at, but I believe that few if any people should find themselves looking at the old site. It will still have the "Please read - Scheduled downtime tonight!" in red on the forum masthead, where the new site has "This is the NEW site hosting!" in green.

Hope that's clear. Any questions, or anomalies spotted, please reply here.

And there's no 'edit' button next to the quote button.

Email notification fixed - old config data left over from Lycos.

No "edit" button - I see this myself, but maybe I get it by being an admin anyway. Will investigate.

Mixed-in posts from other threads. Oh, now that's nasty. I'll have to do a database check.

Pound signs / question-marks - sounds like a data encoding issue, seems to be correct in new posts and bad in old ones. I'll look at fixing that in-place but it might involve a re-import of posts.

Biff: I think it's just in this particular forum that non-administrators can't edit their own posts. I jus tposted using my unprivileged "jmbtest" account and the edit button appears in "News" posts but not here. It would probably be fine to enable it here too, I'll look at that.
