Bats are at risk from wind turbines, researchers have found, because the rotating blades produce a change in air pressure that can kill the mammals.

Canadian scientists examined bats found dead at a wind farm, and concluded that most had internal injuries consistent with sudden loss of air pressure.

Bats use echo-location to avoid hitting the blades but cannot detect the sharp pressure changes around the turbine.

They should look where they're bloody going then, shouldn't they? Wink Smile

Cows are at risk from beef farmers, researchers have found, because the farmers sell meat products that involve killing the mammals.

Animals die for our benefit... not really anything new there! Just another excuse for environmentalists to block progress. How many thousands of birds fly into glass windows every year?

Unless we're in danger of making bats extinct, wind turbines should no more be rejected because of this than glass windows should... Smile

Noooo! (Good job cows can't fly innit Smile ?)

Actually a chap from Aberdeen (this is not a pun, he really was studying at the Granite City) found that you can 'discourage' bats from a site using ordinary microwaves (of the frequency commonly used in Radar, dunno what that is and I should...). Could be something to recommend if the alternative is no more bats.
