We've been notified by the new hosting company that we're causing a lot of load on their server. As an urgent interim measure they want to move us to another host, which will involve a short downtime. It could be as little as 10 minutes, but I'm planning on at least an hour.

I've suggested a time of 2300h tonight (11pm, for those who like namespace collisions) and am waiting for confirmation. I expect to have to disable the entire site for this time, not just forum posting.

Does this mean we're victims of our own popularity?

Updates on this thread as I get them.

I've noticed that, since we switched over, submitting posts takes a long time (15+ seconds); even when other pages from other sites load quickly and I'm getting 4Mb or 5Mb on my broadband link.

Could there be a link between the two issues?

That's interesting - the only other feedback regarding speed I had was that it was slightly better since moving.

Anyway, I've now made a small change ahead of tonight's switch which might improve things - page templates are now cached on the server, for those who understand what that implies. I'd be interested to hear whether you notice any difference over the rest of today.

On the 45-60 Kb I normally get, I sometimes notice the "Make A Donation" link to PayPal slowing things down. Is it possible to have the button image on your own server or something to speed it up a bit?

As you may have noticed, the downtime didn't happen last night.

We're going to try again tonight, a little earlier at 22:30.

I seem to recall something in the PayPal integration instructions saying that you have to link to the image on their site for things to work properly. I thought it was strange at the time, and if I get a chance will investigate further. It shouldn't have an effect on the hosting, though.

I've just posted a story in the News section. The only point in the process where there is still a noticeable delay is when you click on Submit. It does seem faster (ca. 10 secs) than before though.

[p.s. this post took about 6 secs to submit]

Maintenance complete - with many thanks to "Tom I" at FreeVirtualServers for making the transition a breeze. A welcome change from Lycos' non-support.

For the interested, we have moved from IP address 75.126.163.69 to 75.126.12.77 - I'd offer guidance for if you have problems, but if you could see it here, you wouldn't need it.

As usual, any comments on performance, functionality or unexpected behaviour welcome on this thread.

We're now running on a faster server which technically is above the spec of the package we've paid for. We're going to see how well we behave on this server and probably revisit toward the end of August / September - so that's early warning of potential downtime then. How good can it get? Very Happy

Posting and browsing are both definitely noticeably faster.

Hmm - that upgrade from the ZX81 to the QL seems to have worked.

Yep - but the nasty little things pack up quite quickly and then lose all your data ... been there, got the T-shirt Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Best to use a REAL tape drive.

I'm not sure why, but email notifications of new PMs and posts seems to be working now - an unexpected bonus.
